Sunscreen Causes Cancer? Maybe, Says U.S. Senator

Does sunscreen cause skin cancer? That would be a shocker, but apparently the U.S. FDA is looking at evidence that a common sunscreen ingredient, retinyl palmitate, causes the killer disease. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is asking the agency make public the information it has. "Summer is here, people are soaking up the sun and the FDA needs to immediately provide guidance and reassurance to consumers," he said.

Studies by the FDA's National Center for Toxicological Research and the National Toxicology Program suggest there may be a connection between skin cancer and retinyl palmitate, which is used in 100s of the most popular sunscreens. Schumer wants the facts made public, and he wants new federal regulations to block use of the additive if, in fact, it’s a cancer agent.

40% of U.S. Teens Having Sex, Government Says

More than 40% of unmarried U.S. teenagers have had sex at least once, a new government report shows. This continues a flattening trend seen since 2002 and caps a downward trend seen between 1995 and 2002, especially in males, said researcher Joyce Abma. The report was issued Wednesday by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. "One of the great success stories of the past two decades has been the extraordinary declines in teen pregnancy and childbearing," said Bill Albert, chief program officer at the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "This progress has recently stalled out."

Men: Last 5 Times Longer with University-Created Penis Spray

A new spray for men who suffer premature ejaculation (PE) could help them last more than five times longer in bed (5xLonger.com). Some 30% of men suffer from PE. There are no prescription drugs to treat PE, but the spray developed by the University of California, San Francisco, known as PSD502, showed promise in a three-month experiment, where one group of men who suffered from PE were given the desensitizing spray, and another group a placebo five minutes before they had sex. The men given the drug spray (a combination of lidocaine and prilocaine) lasted longer during sex than the placebo group. The study was presented at the American Urological Association meeting in San Francisco. You can own the domain 5xLonger.com (or 6xLonger.com) – just submit your offer as a “comment” to this blog. Ogden Inside & Out

Ogden is one strange town.  A “Top 10 Climbing Town”, whatever that is, so-named by the widely read (?) Rock & Ice Magazine; a “Do It All, Whatever the Season” city, according to Men’s Journal; and one of the “20 Best Towns in America”, according to Outside Magazine. The staid old New York Times, which may or may not know anything about what’s happening west of the Hudson River, said authoritatively that "Ogden, Utah, is on several lists today including the best place to do business, the best economy, and the hippest city in America."

The sixth largest city in Utah, Ogden clearly cherishes the businesses that have set up shop there. Outdoors-oriented companies thrive, including these who make Ogden their corporate HQ - Descente, DNA, Salomon, Suunto, Atomic, Goode Ski Technologies, Peregrine, Kahuna Creations, Scott USA and Rossignol. Other resident headquarters include TK, Autoliv, Flying J, FMC Technologies, Hershey, Fresenius Medical, Kimberly Clark, Market Star, Parker Hannifin and Williams International.

"Stoner Cuisine" Promoted by the New York Times!

“Everybody smokes dope after work,” super chef and foodie author Anthony Bourdain (Kitchen Confidential) told the New York Times. “People you would never imagine.” Drug use in the kitchen can change the experience in the dining room. Says the staid old Times: “Today, an influential band of cooks says both their chin-dripping, carbohydrate-heavy food and the accessible, feel-good mood in their dining rooms are influenced by the kind of herb [marijuana] that can get people arrested. Call it stoner cuisine.”

Bourdain notes, “These are restaurants created specially for the tastes of the slightly stoned, slightly drunk chef after work.” Examples include David Chang's restaurants; Au Pied de Cochon in Montreal, with its poutine of foie gras; Crif Dogs in the East Village, which makes a deep-fried cheesesteak hot dog; and the entire genre of mutant-hot-dog stands.”

Personalized Oncology Widely Marketed

The latest buzzword in cancer is "personalized oncology." U.S. National Cancer Institute Director John Niederhuber, MD, wrote about the dawn of an era of "personalized cancer medicine" with "specific, targeted therapeutic solutions" in a 2008 Cancer Bulletin editorial. "We are now designing precise therapies to home in on specific targets that result from genomic and functional changes, not only in the tumor cell but also in the tumor microenvironment.”

Many companies have introduced personal oncology products and services, and hospitals and cancer centers worldwide are now marketing personal oncology. This blogger is selling the valuable domain “MyPersonalOncology.com”. Asking $7500, but all offers welcome. Submit your offer as a “comment” to this blog.
